Matthias Holweg

American Standard Companies Professor of Operations Management Saïd Business School, University of Oxford

Matthias is the American Standard Companies Professor of Operations Management at Saïd Business School and an Ordinary Student at Christ Church, University of Oxford. His research focuses on innovating safely with artificial intelligence by developing AI systems that are legally compliant, ethically grounded, and technically robust. He actively contributes to policy debates surrounding the regulation of artificial intelligence, consulting widely with companies and policymakers on this critical matter. In collaboration with colleagues at Oxford, he has co-developed an ethics-based audit protocol for AI systems to meet forthcoming regulatory mandates for conformity assessment. This protocol provides a rigorous framework to evaluate the ethical implications and societal impacts of AI technologies before their widespread deployment. At Oxford Saïd, he oversees the Technology and Operations Management and Leading Digital Transformation course offerings and directs the Oxford Artificial Intelligence Programme. He also serves as a member of the School Board. Prior to joining Oxford, he was on the faculty of the University of Cambridge and a Sloan Industry Center Fellow at MIT’s Engineering Systems Division.
