Maciej Brzeziński is Head of the Data Office in the Directorate General Statistics at the European Central Bank (ECB). In this role, he leads the development and implementation of organisation-wide data management, with a strong focus on data governance, data architecture, and advanced analytics, including data science, machine learning and AI. He plays a key role in strengthening collaboration on data management across the European System of Central Banks (ESCB) and the Single Supervisory Mechanism (SSM) fostering knowledge sharing, developing common guidance, and promoting best practices.
Beyond Europe, Maciej serves as Co-Chair of the Central Bank Data Collaboration Group (CBDSG), a global forum that brings together central banks worldwide to promote cooperation and the exchange of expertise on data strategy, governance, and technology.
With over 20 years of experience at the ECB, Maciej has worked at the intersection of data, technology, and financial market infrastructure. His professional background includes:
• enterprise and IT architecture, with responsibility for shaping the ECB’s cloud environment, including infrastructure supporting data analytics and statistical production;
• project portfolio management, delivering major solution for hosting ECB’s systems;
• operations management, including large-scale data platforms; and
• design of the Trans-European Automated Real-time Gross Settlement Express Transfer (TARGET) and TARGET2-Securities (T2S) financial market infrastructure services, ensuring the seamless flow of cash and securities across the European Union.
Maciej is also a member of the ISI Advisory Board on Ethics, contributing to international discussions on ethical principles in statistics and ethical use of statistical data and tools. He holds a MSc in Engineering from the Technical University of Łódź, specialising in Automation and Robotics Engineering. He began his professional career as a research assistant in robotics, with a focus on neural networks.
