Head of Strategic Data & Analytics Howden

Allan Engelhardt is Principal and Head of Strategic Data & Analytics at Howden, where he leads the team building client-facing data products for the employee benefits business and works across the group on the adoption of data and AI by insurance, benefits, and actuarial teams.

He has spent twenty years running data and analytics functions with commercial accountability, including customer base management at Vodafone and membership of the leadership team at Bupa Global, a £1bn international health insurance business.

He founded and ran the data consultancy CYBAEA for seventeen years and built Management Decision Analytics, Howden's data science practice, from a standing start. His recent work includes Benefits IQ, an AI-enabled benchmarking product used by consultants in client work, and two phases of AI research with the Lloyd's Market Association. The second phase covered firms representing more than 60% of Lloyd's stamp capacity.

His interests include the attribution problem for data functions, AI governance in regulated firms, and why capabilities rarely survive contact with the systems into which they are introduced. He trained as an experimental particle physicist at CERN.
